Aspects from the Days of Ignorance - Abu Inaayah Seif - Lesson One Introduction “These are the aspects that the people of the Days of Ignorance – both the people of the Book and the non-People of the Book – were upon, which the Messenger of Allaah opposed. They are from the matters that every Muslim is required to possess knowledge of. This is since with (understanding) one side of the opposite, the goodness of the other side of the opposite can be made apparent. And it is by (making apparent the) opposite of something that matters become clarified. The most important of these aspects (of the Days of Ignorance) and most severe in terms of danger was the absence of faith (Eemaan) in the heart, for what the Messenger of Allaah came with. Nullifiers of Islaam - Lesson One | Abu Inaayah Seif www.oxfordsalafidawah.co.uk English Text: THE FIRST NULLIFIER Know that the Nullifiers of Islaam are ten. First: Shirk (associating partners) in the worship of Allaah. Allaah says: “Verily, Allaah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him in worship (i.e. Shirk), but He forgives what is less than that to whom He wills.” [Surah An-Nisaa: 116] And He says: “Verily, the one who mixes partners in worship with Allaah (Shirk), then Paradise has been made forbidden for him and his final abode will be the Hellfire. And the wrongdoers will not have any helpers (in Hell).” [Surah Al-Maa’idah: 72] What falls into this is performing sacrifices to someone other than Allaah, such as the person who offers a sacrifice to the Jinn or to a grave. THE SECOND NULLIFIER Second: Whoever places intermediaries between himself and Allaah, calling unto them and asking intercession from them, and seeking reliance in them, has committed disbelief according to the unanimous agreement (Ijmaa’). THE THIRD NULLIFIER Third: Whoever does not hold the polytheists to be disbelievers, or has doubts about their disbelief or considers their ways and beliefs to be correct, has committed disbelief. THE FOURTH NULLIFIER Fourth: Whoever believes that some guidance other than that of the Prophet’s (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is more complete than his guidance and that someone else’s judgement is better than his judgement, such as the one who prefers the judgement of the Tawaagheet (pl. of Taaghoot; false deities/religions) over his judgement, then he is a disbeliever. THE FIFTH NULLIFIER Fifth: Whoever hates something that the Messenger came with, even though he may act on it, has disbelieved. THE SIXTH NULLIFIER Sixth: Whoever mocks or ridicules any part of the Messenger’s Religion or its rewards or punishments has committed an act of disbelief. The proof for this is Allaah’s statement: “Say: ‘Was it Allaah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuses, you have disbelieved after having had faith.” [Surah At-Tawbah: 65-66] THE SEVENTH NULLIFIER Seventh: Sorcery, which includes magic spells that cause a person to hate something he seeks after (sarf) or love something he doesn’t seek after (‘atf). So whoever performs it or is pleased with it being done, has committed disbelief. The proof for this is Allaah’s statement: “And neither of these two (angels) would teach anyone until they had first said to them: ‘We are only a trial (for the people), so do not commit disbelief.’” [Surah AlBaqarah: 102] THE EIGHTH NULLIFIER Eighth: Supporting and assisting the polytheists against the Muslims. The proof for this is Allaah’s statement: “And whoever amongst you takes them (i.e. the disbelievers) as allies and protectors then he is indeed from among them. Verily, Allaah does not guide a wrong-doing people.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah: 51] THE NINTH NULLIFIER Ninth: Whoever believes that it is permitted for some people to be free of (implementing) the Sharee’ah (revealed laws) of Muhammad (i.e. Islaam), just as it was permitted for Al-Khidr to be free from the Sharee’ah of Moosaa, then he is a disbeliever. THE TENTH NULLIFIER Tenth: Turning away from Allaah’s Religion, not learning it or implementing it (is an act of disbelief). The proof for this is Allaah’s saying: “And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the ayaat (signs/verses) of his Lord, then turns away from them. Verily, We shall extract retribution from the criminals.” [Surah As-Sajdah: 22] There is no difference, with regard to (committing any of) these nullifiers, between the one who jokes, the one who is serious or the one who does so out of fear. However, the one who commits them due to being coerced (is excused). All of these (ten) matters are from the gravest in danger and from those that most often occur. So the Muslim must beware of them and fear from these acts befalling him. We seek refuge in Allaah from those things that bring about His Anger and painful Punishment. May the peace and blessing be on the best of His creatures, Muhammad (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). 1:19:47

'Whoever Loves to Meet Allaah, then Allaah Loves to Meet him' Shaykh Zayd Al-Madkhali رَحِمَهُ الله On the authority of Abi Al-Zinaad, on the authority of Al-A'raj, on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: Allaah, exalted be He the Most High, said: "If My slave loves to meet Me then I love to meet him, and if he dislikes to meet Me then I dislike to meet him." Shaykh Zayd Al-Madkhali: رَحِمَهُ الله "And this is specific to the time of (being at) the brink of death. Close to the appointed time (of death). The believer is in a state of delightfulness. The angels give him glad tidings. The angels descend upon him and give him glad tidings. So he loves to meet Allaah. And the intended meaning of this is not at a time of wellbeing and the ability to choose. For the mother of the believers, 'Aaisha, may Allaah be pleased with her said: "We all dislike death." (Then) he ﷺ said: "The affair is not that, but rather it is at the time of (being at) the brink of death." Whoever loves to meet Allaah at that time then Allaah loves to meet him. And the believer loves to meet Allaah at that time (i.e the brink of death) due to what he sees from good and what he feels from sensations. In which Allaah, عزّوجلّ said: تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ "...on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): “Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!" نَحْنُ أَوْلِيَاؤُكُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ "We have been your friends in the life of this world and are (so) in the Hereafter..." [41: 30-31] Those verses. And this is what makes him (i.e. the believer) love to meet Allaah. As for the people of wrongdoing (and sin) then, in that instance, they do not love to meet Allaah because they will not be given tidings of anything except torment and punishments in both the grave and the hereafter. So he does not love to meet Allaah but rather he dislikes it and Allaah dislikes to meet him. And that is not except that the recompense from Allaah is relative to the kind of action (performed). Such as the one who increases in performing righteous good deeds and persists upon them, then Allaah will make him firm. And the Angels descend upon him at every time from the times of difficulty and need, and the greatest time of need is at the brink of death. 'We only celebrate the Mawlid to remember the Prophet ﷺ.' Responded to by Shaykh Muhammad Amān Al-Jāmi رَحِمَهُ الله There's a questioner who is asking, and many people ask this (same) question. They say: "We do not want anything (by way of celebrating the Prophet's ﷺ birthday) except to remember (him). The companions did not celebrate it because they were close to the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ in that time period (but) as for us, after this long passing of time, we (only) want to remember the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ." (So) we ask (them): 'When did the Muslims forget about the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ so that we (need) to remind them by celebrating (his birthday) and gathering together upon eating, drinking and (burning) bukhoor on the 12th night of Rabi' Al-Awwal every year?!' 'And have the Muslims (actually) forgotten the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ?!' 'And is it permissible for them to forget him?!' NO! Their Mu'adhin does not proclaim the Adhan saying: 'I testify that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allaah alone' except that he says: 'I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah' A Muslim does not enter the masjid except that he says: 'In the Name of Allaah, may Allaah raise the rank of the Messenger of Allaah and grant him peace' And all those who increase in performing the prayer, other than the obligatory prayers, (and) in every single prayer, ask Allaah to raise the rank of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ. And a Muslim does not exit from the masjid except that he asks Allaah to raise the rank of the Prophet ﷺ and grant him peace. A student of knowledge does not read his lesson and a teacher does not teach his lesson except that he asks Allaah to raise the rank of the Prophet ﷺ, multiple times in one single lesson. In conclusion, we are mentioning the blessings of Allaah that we have not forgotten the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ and all of the Muslims. So we are not in need of that which is called 'remembering the Mawlid (birthday of the Prophet ﷺ). 2:23

'The only tābi'ee to narrate from ALL ten companions promised paradise' Shaykh Mohammad bin Aadam Al-Ethiopi رَحِمَهُ الله "...he said 'narrated to us by Qays ibn Abi Haazim'... Qays ibn Abi Haazim is the only taabi'ee to narrate from all ten of the companions promised paradise DIRECTLY. Or... we (can) say he is the ONLY one... there are none from the taabi'een who share in being agreed upon that they have narrated from ALL of the ten companions promised paradise. With a difference of opinion regarding 'Abdur Rahman ibn Al-'Awf and what is correct is that he didn't (narrate from all ten). As for that which Al-Haakim mentioned in 'Uloom Al-Hadeeth' that ibn Musayyib and so and so, he mentioned (some) things, then this is from his (own) erroneous deductions, and other than this (i.e Qays bin Abi Haazim being the only one) is incorrect. ***And that is Qays, who has no similitude*** ***And Al-Haakim included many (along with him)*** As said by ibn Salaah. ***And that is Qays... i.e the one who narrated from the ten promised paradise. ***The taabi'oon are of ten levels*** ***with an (additional) five, the first of them is (the one who has narrations) from (all) ten*** He said... Did you say unto men: ‘Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?’ ” He will say: “Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. Amongst them were those who worshiped the angels, some who worshiped the Prophets and righteous ones, and from them were those who worshiped trees and stones, some who worshiped the sun and the moon. The Messenger of Allaah fought them and did not differentiate between them. And the evidence is His statement, the Most-High: “And fight them until there is no more fitnah (disbelief and worshiping of others besides Allaah) and all the deen is for Allaah alone.” فدليل الشمس والقمر، قوله تعالى: وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ۚ لَا تَسْجُدُوا لِلشَّمْسِ وَلَا لِلْقَمَرِ وَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَهُنَّ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ And the evidence for the sun and moon is His statement, the Most-High: “And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Lesson four goes through the second principle, covering the following text: القاعدة الثانية: أنهم يقولون: ما دعوناهم وتوجهنا إليهم، إلا لطلب القربة، والشفاعة. فدليل القربة: قوله تعالى: وَالَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاءَ مَا نَعْبُدُهُمْ إِلَّا لِيُقَرِّبُونَا إِلَى اللَّهِ زُلْفَىٰ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَهُمْ فِي مَا هُمْ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي مَنْ هُوَ كَاذِبٌ كَفَّارٌ [الزمر: 3] The second principle: That they (the Mushrikoon) say: we do not call upon and turn to them except to seek nearness and intercession (with Allaah) ”…And those who take protectors besides Him [say], “We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allaah in position.” Indeed, Allaah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allaah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.” [39:3] والشفاعة: شفاعتان؛ شفاعة: منفية؛ وشفاعة مثبتة؛ فالشفاعة المنفية، هي التي تطلب من غير الله، فيما لا يقدر عليه إلا الله؛ والدليل قوله تعالى: (يا أيها الذين آمنوا أنفقوا مما رزقناكم من قبل أن يأتي يوم لا بيع فيه ولا خلة ولا شفاعة والكافرون هم الظالمون) [البقرة: 254] والمثبتة، هي: التي تطلب من الله، فيما لا يقدر عليه إلا الله؛ والشافع: مكرم بالشفاعة؛ والمشفوع له: من رضي الله قوله وعمله، بعد الإذن؛ والدليل قوله تعالى: (من ذا الذي يشفع عنده إلا بإذنه) [البقرة: 255] Intercession is of two types, the negated/prohibited intercession, and the affirmed intercession. The negated/prohibited intercession is that which is sought from other than Allaah concerning that which only Allaah is able to do. And the proof is His, the Most-High, statement: “O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.).” [2:254] And the intercession that is affirmed: is that which is sought from Allaah concerning that which only Allaah is able to do. The intercessor is he who is honoured with the intercession, and the one being interceded for is the one whom Allaah is pleased with his speech and actions, after permission has been granted. And the evidence is His, the Most-High, statement:  ”Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?” [2:255] 26:45

May Allaah guide you to His obedience: that Al-Haneefiyyah, the religion of Ibraheem, is that you worship Allaah making the religion sincerely for Him, as He said: “ And I have not created the Jinn and Mankind except to worship Me (Alone)” [Adh-Dhariyaat: 56] فإذا عرفت: أن الله خلقك لعبادته، فاعلم: أن العبادة لا تسمى عبادة، إلا مع التوحيد، كما أن الصلاة لا تسمى صلاة، إلا مع الطهارة؛ فإذا دخل الشرك في العبادة، فسدت، كالحدث إذا دخل في الطهارة When you acknowledge that Allaah has created you for His worship, then know that worship is not regarded as worship unless it is accompanied by Tawheed, just as prayer is not regarded as prayer unless it is accompanied by purification. So when Shirk enters into worship it corrupts it just like an impurity invalidates purification. فإذا عرفت: أن الشرك إذا خالط العبادة أفسدها، وأحبط العمل، وصار صاحبه من الخالدين في النار؛ عرفت: أن أهم ما عليك معرفة ذلك، لعل الله أن يخلصك من هذه الشبكة، وهي الشرك بالله، وذلك بمعرفة أربع قواعد، ذكرها الله في كتابه When you acknowledge that when shirk enters into worship it corrupts it, and nullifies all actions and the one who does it is eternally in the fire, then you will realise the most important affair that is obligatory upon you is: recognition of this fact, in order that Allaah may save you from this snare/trap, which is (Shirk) associating partners with Allaah in which He said pertaining to (it): ”Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases…” [4: 48] And this knowledge comprises of four principles which Allaah has mentioned in His Book. 28:10

It became known at the time of the 'Abbaasiyyah (Abbasid Caliphate). It began in the time of the 'Abbaasiyyah (Abbasid Caliphate). And before the time of the 'Abbaasiyyah (Abbasid Caliphate), what 'Aqeedah were the Muslims upon? The companions and the Caliphs of the Umayyid Caliphate and the Caliphs of the Abbasid Caliphate up until Al-Ma'mun Al-Abbaasi, the seventh Caliph... before that they did not know of this 'Aqeedah which is referred to now as the 'Aqeedah of Ash'ariyyah. 'The Month of Worship & Obedience' - AMAZING ADVICE by Shaykh 'Abd Al-Aziz bin Bāz رَحِمَهُ الله And the month of Ramadān is a tremendous month! (It is) a blessed month! Allāh has favoured His slaves with it and has placed for them a tremendous reward and a huge bounty by way of the expiation of sins, the wiping away of wrong-doings, and the raising of ranks. So it is befitting that the Ummah are delighted with it and are rejoiceful of it, and persevere upon fasting throughout it, upon Eemān and anticipation (of reward), and upon standing (in the night prayer) with Eemān and anticipating (the reward) and that they strive hard to protect and preserve their fasting and their standing from all that which Allāh, the Mighty and Sublime, has made impermissible, this is what is befitting for the believer. And what is legislated for us also is to give importance to the dissemination of knowledge in this month, and to direct the people towards good and call the people to that which Allāh has obligated upon them and warn them from that which Allāh has prohibited for them. For indeed the souls in this month are receptive to guidance, receptive to the Da’wah, so it’s befitting for you, O servant of Allah, especially the people of knowledge, to give importance to this tremendous affair and to direct the people towards good and guide them to that which Allāh has obligated upon them and warn them from that which Allāh has prohibited them from, along with commanding with good and forbidding from evil with patience, seeking reward and sincerity to Allāh. And likewise, to show concern to the poor and care for them, all of this is from the important affairs. So it was said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, why did you say this and that?' He said: "Jibreal appeared to me and said: 'O Mohammad, whoever reaches Ramadān and is not forgiven, then (when) he dies he enters the fire. Say Ameen' So I said 'Ameen'. He (Jibreal) said: 'And whoever reaches his parents (in old age), one of them or both of them, and is not dutiful towards them, then (when) he dies he enters the fire. Say Ameen' So I said 'Ameen'. He (Jibreal) said: 'And when you are mentioned to someone, O Mohammad, and he doesn't send Salah upon you, then (when) he dies he enters the fire.' Say Ameen' So I said 'Ameen'. Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān حَفِظَهُ الله A caller calls out every night from the nights of the month of Ramadān (saying): 'O seeker of good, commence! O seeker of evil, refrain! And Allāh has people whom He frees from the fire. And that (transpires) every night.' 'O seeker of good, commence! Is there anyone that doesn't want good?! Every one of us wants good and all the people want good. But the affair is not restricted to (just simply) wanting. Actions are a must! If you want good then act! وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الْآخِرَةَ وَسَعَىٰ لَهَا سَعْيَهَا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُولَٰئِكَ كَانَ سَعْيُهُمْ مَشْكُورًا "But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer – it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah]." [17:19] So if you want good then act! Act upon good. (Simply) wanting is not sufficient. For it has come in the Hadeeth: الْعَاجِزُ مَنْ أَتْبَعَ نَفْسَهُ هَوَاهَا وَتَمَنَّى عَلَى اللَّهِ الْأَمَانِى "The incapable one is he who follows his desires and (merely) hopes in Allah (with) wishful thinking." Wishful thinking does not benefit! And intention on its own without any action does not benefit. 'O seeker of good, commence!' Turn to Allāh with acts of obedience! Turn to Allāh with (those means of) seeking nearness! The first of them being; perseverance upon the obligatory (acts, by performing them) in their (correct) times. Then (persevere upon) the rest of the actions. Hasten to (performing) them, diversify them, busy (yourself) with them. For you are soon in (dire) need of them. By Allah, soon you will be in need of (just) one good deed when time catches up to you. When time catches up to you, and actions cease and are sealed, and you (will be) hoping to return in order to perform righteous deeds. And you will not be able to do that. For you are now at a time of requesting and in a time of aspiration. And Allāh has commenced this month upon you, so hasten (to perform) acts of obedience and (means of seeking) nearness. 'O seeker of good, commence!' Turn to Allāh! And turn away from other than Him. Turn to Allāh with acts of obedience and (those means of) seeking nearness and charity and doing good. Turn to Allāh with every type of approach and turning to Allāh, for indeed Allāh turns to you (in acceptance & forgiveness), Glorified be He the Most-High. And He accepts from you (every) small and big (action), and he multiplies for you the small (deeds) by many folds. إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ ۖ وَإِنْ تَكُ حَسَنَةً يُضَاعِفْهَا وَيُؤْتِ مِنْ لَدُنْهُ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا "Surely! Allāh wrongs not even of the weight of an atom (or a small ant), but if there is any good (done), He doubles it, and gives from Him a great reward." [4:40] So turn to Allāh with every type of approach and turning, for indeed Allāh turns to you (in acceptance & forgiveness) as long as you turn to Him. Take Advantage of the Middle Ten Days of Ramadān! Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān حَفِظَهُ الله O people! Fear Allāh, the Most-High! The first ten days have passed from your month (i.e. the month of Ramadān) and are upon the verge of the middle ten days. Then don't slow down (when) the last ten days come upon you (and) then (suddenly) the month comes to an end. So look at what you have deposited by way of good deeds. Think about what has passed from it, and how you will spend what remains (of it). Contemplate within yourselves. Whoever is a good-doer then let him continue and complete it (i.e. the month) with benevolence and good. And whoever fell short and was heedless, then let him repent to Allāh for that which has passed and catch up with what remains (of it), for indeed actions are (in accordance with) their endings. So Fear Allāh O servants of Allāh. Preserve and persist in your month in which Allāh has made as an opportunity for you in your life. Do not waste it! (It's a) tremendous month, the month of fasting and standing (in prayer). The gates of hell are closed and the gates of paradise are open. Who are 'the People of the Qur'ān?' Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān حَفِظَهُ الله But (in relation to how) the people are with this Qur'ān, then from them are those who recite it with a correct recitation and they act (in accordance) with it. And they are 'the people of the Qur'ān'. And perhaps a person doesn't recite the Qur'ān, meaning he doesn't recite all of it, for there is not a Muslim who doesn't know some part of the Qur'ān, even if it be a small (portion). The Muslim has some portion of the Qur'ān (he knows). He memorises chapters or (whole) parts or he memorises the entire Qur'ān. But (as long as) he acts (in accordance) with the Qur'ān, and he is upright (upon) the Qur'ān, then he is from 'the people of the Qur'ān'. Even if he has not memorised it. But as for the one who has memorised the Qur'ān and has proficiency in it yet he doesn't act (in accordance) with it, then the Qur'ān has not benefited him. But rather it is just a proof against him on the Day of Resurrection. Even if he is proficient in its recitation, and embellishes it (with tajweed), and begins reciting it in gatherings and celebratory events, and he amazes the people with his recitation, so they listen attentively to him recite due to its beauty. But he is not from 'the people of Qur'ān'. Because he did not act (in accordance) with it. For 'the people of Qur'ān are those who act (in accordance) with it. And due to this, there has come in a hadeeth that: "a people will appear towards the end of time and will recite the Qu'rān and straighten it, like the straightening of an arrow". Meaning they will be proficient in its recitation and embellishes it (with tajweed), but it will not go past their throats. It will not go past their throats. Because they don't act (in accordance) with it, and they don't implement its commands, and they don't cease (to perform) that which it forbids. So the recitation of the Qur'ān does not benefit them, but rather it will be a proof against them on the Day of Resurrection. 'Upon the Muslim is to Strive in this Month' Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān حَفِظَهُ الله Upon the Muslim is to strive in (performing) acts of obedience, throughout his life span, and throughout all of his time. But specifically in this month (i.e. the month of Ramadān), the striving of the believer increases. Because it is a time for righteous actions (to be performed). Its days are (spent by) fasting and its nights are (spent by) standing (in prayer). And the rest of its time (is spent) reciting the Qur'ān and remembering Allāh, Glorified be He, the Most-High. Upon the Muslim is to strive in this month, even more so than he used to do in other than it, with righteous good deeds. For it is the month of acts of obedience, and the month of (multitudes of) goodness and blessings. Allāh has made it a season (of good) for His slaves, that they compete within it (to obtain) gardens (of Paradise). But (yet) some of the people do not know of this month (to be anything) except that it is a month of sleeping throughout the day, and staying awake at night, (engaged in that which is) of no benefit, or rather upon sin. So what benefit did he gain, this (person who is) bankrupt and devoid, from the month of Ramadān? So upon the Muslim is to strive for his own sake. مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۗ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ "Whosoever does righteous good deed it is for (the benefit of) his ownself, and whosoever does evil, it is against his ownself, and your Lord is not at all unjust to (His) slaves." I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright." [2: 186] This ayah (verse) came amidst the verses (pertaining to) fasting. Allāh, the Most-Sublime, informs his fasting slaves to increase in making Dua' (supplication). Whilst they are fasting and throughout this month generally. Because when supplication is coupled with fasting, it is more deserving of being answered. The supplication of the one fasting is more deserving of being answered. And that is because the one fasting is in a state of worship, and that is (by way of him) fasting. So if he calls upon Allāh during it (i.e. during the fast) then that is more deserving and worthy of being answered to by Allāh. Even though supplications are answered at any (given) time, especially if they are from the one in severe need. Allāh is near (with His Knowledge) and responds at any time. But there are certain times and instances in which supplications are (more) certain (of being responded to). Such as during the fast, in Ramadān and in other than (the month of) Ramadān. (During) the fast, regardless of whether (it be) in Ramadān and in other than (the month of) Ramadān. But the one who is fasting during the month of Ramadān and supplicates, (many) virtues are combined for him. The first of them is the virtue of the month (itself), and secondly the virtue of fasting, and thirdly the virtue of the supplication (itself). All of them being acts of worship. And supplication is the greatest type of worship. As has (been mentioned) in the hadeeth: "Supplication is worship". Meaning it is the greatest type of worship. Allāh, the Most-High, said: وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا "And the mosques are for Allāh (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allah." 'Utilizing Ramadān as a Transaction to Prosper from in this Life & the Next' Shaykh Mohammad bin Sālih Al-Uthaymeen رَحِمَهُ الله And the month of Ramadān, Allāh has made it distinct with (certain) unique and distinctive characteristics. And this is why it is befitting for us, that we are joyful at its approach, and we be delighted with it. Because it is a season of good. Have you seen that when the seasons of trade approach, do the traders become delighted or not? They become delighted and joyful, and they prepare for it and they travel to it. And the trade and transaction of Ramadān is, by Allāh, more rewarding and more prosperous than the trade of the merchants and traders. Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, said: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ تِجَارَةٍ تُنْجِيكُمْ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ "O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? " [61:10] This, by Allāh, is a transaction. Because the transaction (that occurs in) the religion, ya ikhwān, pay attention to this point. Trade (that occurs in) the religion is a trade and a transaction for this life and the hereafter. And trade in this life, if it is not (done) in accordance with the Islamic legislation, then it is a loss in (both) this life and the hereafter. Upon you is the trade (that occurs in) the religion. We are receiving a tremendous season, which is the month of Ramadān, (the month) which Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, has specified and made distinct with (certain) unique and distinctive characteristics. From them is that Allāh sent down within it the Qur'ān. As Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, said: شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ "The month of Ramadān in which was revealed the Qur'ān...." [2:185] And the sending down of the Qur'ān is a huge, tremendous blessing. Because Allāh sent it down as a cure for what is within the chests. 'An Advice to Those Afflicted with Smoking' Shaykh Mohammad bin Sālih Al-Uthaymeen رَحِمَهُ الله And no doubt, that an entire month (i.e. the month of Ramadān) passes by the believer, and he adorns himself with (lofty) mannerisms, then, without doubt, his direction and path will change. He will turn back to Allāh after (previously) fleeing from Him. And he will turn back to obedience after disobedience. And his manners will improve. Because an entire a month a person spends (engaging) in that which is pleasing to Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, has to have an effect upon him, in any case. And in light of this occasion (i.e. Ramadān), I (would like to) send a message to those whom Allāh has afflicted and put to trial with smoking. Smoking is Harām (impermissible). And it has become (even) clearer to the scholars now that it is Harām (impermissible). And that the one who smokes is disobedient to Allāh and His Messenger. And that if he persists upon smoking, then he transitions from the confines of uprightness to the confines of immorality and sinful disobedience. He becomes a Fāsiq (sinful and disobedient). And the month of Ramadān is a vast arena for the one whom Allaah wants for him guidance. So STOP smoking! Because an entire day will pass him by whilst he hasn't smoked. So he is patient and tolerant during the night (of Ramadān, by not smoking) then the next day comes, and after a week has passed, his situation will change. Perhaps in the first week, it will be really difficult upon him. (But) from what we've followed up upon and been patient with, we've found that those affairs in which Allāh wills to change, (usually) change within one week. And this is why the 'Aqeeqah, slaughtering for the (new-born) infant is when? On the seventh day, an (entire) week has passed. And this (i.e. waiting period of one week helps) develop and advance a thing. Many of the people (when they) fall ill and are patient upon it, then after (the passing of) one week their circumstance changes. Either (their health) worsens or improves. So I say that those who have been afflicted with smoking, they will find within the first week great difficulty. But they should endure and be patient. Because, even if the price is dazzling, the product is expensive. The price is dazzling, they will spend and it will be a burden upon them, but the product is expensive. May Allāh protect them from this evil (act of) smoking. So after one week passes, their circumstances change, and after the passing of the second week, they progress even more, and so-on so-forth. So this blessed month does not pass by except that Allāh saves and protects whom He wills from His slaves from this evil (act of) smoking. But what remains upon him is to fulfill this covenant of protection by way of steering clear of, and keeping away from those who smoke. Shaykh Mohammad bin Saalih Al-Uthaymeen رَحِمَهُ الله Transcribe: "And is fasting (only) that we refrain from eating, drinking, and (sexual intercourse with) one’s family? NO! That is (just) an apparent, physical fast. But the true, spiritual fast, is that a person abstains from that which Allaah has forbidden. And due to this, Allaah, the Most-High, said: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ "O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun". [2: 183] And He (Allaah) did not say: 'So that you may become hungry', 'So that you may become thirsty', 'So that you may refrain from sexual intercourse with your spouses'. (But) He said: لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ "..that you may become Al-Muttaqun" And the Prophet ﷺ clarified this in his statement: “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting in accordance with it, and (does not abandon) Jahl (transgression), then Allaah is not in need of him leaving off his food and drink.” Allaah, the Most-High, did not obligate fasting upon us (as a) punishment for us by way of it. (Intending to punish us through) hunger and thirst, and refraining from (sexual intercourse) with one’s family. But rather, He wants from us that we leave off and abandon false speech, and acting in accordance with it, and transgression. So what is false speech? False speech is every (single) statement that is impermissible. That is false speech. Every statement that is impermissible is false speech. Regardless of whether it is bearing false testament, or backbiting, or tale-carrying, or lying, or other than that. Every statement that is impermissible, then it is what? False speech. Because it is derived from the word 'Zoura' meaning deviation. "..and acting in accordance with it." Meaning acting in accordance with falsehood. And it is intended by this, every act that is impermissible. Such as looking at women, and looking into the books of innovation, and looking at evil films, and other than that. "..and (does not abandon) Jahl (transgression).." And Jahl is transgressing against the people. And it is not (the Jahl which means the) opposite of knowledge. No. Because the intent of Jahl (here) is transgression. Just as is (mentioned) in the statement of the poet: 'And let no-one transgress upon us so that we (end up) transgressing more than the transgression of the transgressors.' What is the meaning of 'Laa yajhal ahad alayna'? It means; (let him) not transgress upon us, for if he transgresses upon us, then we become more severe (in our transgression upon him). For if Allāh has obligated us to leave off food and drink, (whilst) they are from that which is permissible, then indeed it is an obligation upon us to leave off that which is forbidden first and foremost. And leaving off that which is forbidden is an obligation upon every Muslim at any given time, but in relation to the one fasting (it is) emphasised (more). Because along with its forbiddance and sin, it has an impact upon the fast, (to the point that) his fast becomes (like an) image (or form) that has no reality (or substance) to it. And due to this (the Prophet ﷺ) said: “Perhaps the fasting ones share from his fast (is but) hunger and thirst”. He is hungry and thirsty but that does not benefit him with Allāh. Because he never fortified and guarded his fast from that which punctures it and from that which corrupts it and nullifies its reward. For if his stomach fasts (refraining) from food and drink then his tongue should fast (by refraining from) prohibited speech, from backbiting, insulted, bearing false testament, and other than that from sinful, prohibited speech. He fortifies and protects his fast (to the extent that) even if a person insults him then he does not respond to him. He (the Prophet ﷺ) said: “And if anyone insults him then let him say: ‘I am fasting’”. He remembers his fast so he does not respond to the one who insults and curses him, so how about the one who (he himself) is the one transgressing against the people with insults and curses whilst he is fasting? That is even more severe. Upon the Muslim is to guard his tongue, restrain his tongue from impermissible speech, idleness, and false speech, and other than that from impermissible speech. Even permissible speech, a person should not over-indulge in, because it takes away from his time, and his time is precious. So he should preserve his time by (spending it) remembering Allāh, reciting the Qur’ān, rather than babbling on with speech, even if it be permissible (speech), (for it) wastes his time, so how about if (he engages in) impermissible speech!?'
